This is such a fun snapshot of that era when big fantasy and sci-fi adaptations felt almost mythical, passed around like rumors instead of announced in polished press releases. What stands out most now is how physical the secrecy was — people having to hand over phones and USB sticks, sets locked down like airport gates, crew members whispering to bloggers. Hard to imagine in the age of controlled studio leaks and official social media drip campaigns.

The Hobbit eventually took a very different shape than what’s described here, but the instinct behind the speculation was right: the material between The Hobbit and Fellowship was always going to come from Tolkien’s notes and appendices because the story basically needed connective tissue. And the early descriptions of the Na’vi and bioluminescent fauna in Avatar really did foreshadow what became one of its most memorable visual features. Sometimes the rumours were closer to the truth than the studios would admit.

Also interesting from a workflow standpoint: once you see how much secrecy and cross-team coordination goes into productions like these, you start to understand why even small creative or technical teams benefit from having a clear, documented process. Keeping track of who has access, what version exists where, and who signed off on what can be a mess. agreed. VR is the future. but it will take decades until it becomes mainstream, right now it is only a niche market. but it is growing.
I wonder if Jim has thought of experimenting on VR. the tools he developed for Avatar are perfect for creating VR content. though if i correctly recall, he was very dismissive of it in a past interview.

yeah, I agree with you. It had its problems, and it didnt give me the exact same magic like the original, but overall I think it was a better movie, mostly because of its new relatable characters, bigger depth for the old ones, it raised the stakes, expanded the worldbuilding and ofc its visuals and technical level is again in an entirely new level. Jim is truly the king.

as for Turd, we actually had a discussion about the movie last month. You are right he did disappear just when the movie came out in December. He to the point that I was worried either he died or he watched and hatedt he movie so much, that he didn't want anything to do with Cameron anymore. haha.

no, he is fine, he just took a break from the internet. he loved the movie. but just like me, he was worried that it might not be a big hit after its anemic premiere in the BO. thankfully that didnt hapen, and now all the planned are locked. The only problem is that Turd vanished again and havent seen him since our last chat. justl ike CreepyThinMan. I am starting to believe the conspiracy theory from our AICN days, that Turd and CreepyThinMan are actually the same person. it might be true after all, since it explains Turd's unusually prolonged disappearances. the FBI is after him. ;)

I did indeed see it and loved it.. I feel it addressed all the problems with the first movie. Imho it's a much stronger movie all around. I have not seen Turd anywhere unfortunatly. He seems to be offline these days

True....3D was certainly a fad at the end of the day. Can't argue with that. But VR is currently having a moment with PSVR2. Gaming is the obvious place for VR for the time being. It's where it makes the most sense.

i doubt the owner is interested in reviving it. unfortunately 3D was a fad that came and went, despite everyone calling it the next best thing after Avatar's success. and i dont think Avatar 2 will bring it back either. and that applies for both movies and games, even the more immersive VR remains the niche market. we need a paradigm shift in those technologies, which hasnt come yet.

I've thought about it for sure and I appreciate the kind words and memories! I wish I had the time to give the movies their proper attention, but I don't really. I do miss it. I thought AVATAR 2 was almost as good as the first, but the thing I missed from the first was the proportional difference between the Navi and humans. I found it fascinating especially when Neytiri saved Jake from suffocating. We saw it briefly in A2 with some battle scenes, but not enough in my estimation. That's just me. The HFR was superb. Loved it. How about you?
